Colour and Light

Colour & Light explores the principles that give objects form. The subject progresses from the study of light and shadow on individual objects to the interaction of light between objects. The course places a strong emphasis on rendering techniques with pencils, markers, and gouache in order to efficiently and effectively communicate lit surfaces.

In this second module, students consider the interaction of light between objects within scenes. The scenes are divided into zones of light and shadow. These zones are understood through basic photographic principles. The module also introduces real world conditions, in preparation for environmental lighting.

In the sixth module of Colour & Light, students will explore reflectivity and lighting design. Particular attention will be paid to non-standard light sources, night time conditions and interior lighting scenarios. Communication of mood and emotion through colour will be of paramount importance in order to fulfil the assignments.

Visual Development

Visual Development provides students with the drawing skills to communicate stories. The subject strongly emphasises traditional freehand illustration techniques, technical methods of perspective drawing, and the design fundamentals of picture making for shots. The content progresses from the composition of simple forms to the composition of characters.

This second module continues to develop fundamental drawing skills. The skills are applied to a variety of different subjects. Students will draw props in preparation for arrangements of objects within environments. Students will also progressively refine their knowledge of creature design.

The sixth module of visual Development will intensively explore composition and film language. Students will also continue to apply advanced perspective techniques to architecture and vehicles, and advanced poses to characters. These concepts will come together in a short storyboard assignment.

Human Anatomy

Human Anatomy studies the proportions of the male and female forms. The body is broken down into parts in order to learn the bones and muscles in a logical progression. The subject also applies these anatomical understandings to models during life drawing sessions. The knowledge accumulated throughout the year enables students to accurately draw the human figure without reference material.

In this second module, students focus on the musculature of the human figure. The formation and functionality of the muscles are analyzed, in addition to their origins and insertions. This knowledge is then applied to dynamic figure drawing and life drawing studies.

Concept Design

Concept Design focuses on the creation of images that communicate designs to modellers within production pipelines. The subject refines the style and ideation of individual set pieces, rather than the composition of shots for stories. Students will expedite their workflows with software in order to apply the principles of aesthetic design, the physics of functional design, and their extensive research to environmental concepts.

Digital Sculpting for Concept Art

Digital Sculpting for Concept Art takes you through the professional production pipeline to produce concept art from film scripts. The course incorporates Photoshop, Zbrush, Keyshot, and Maya to expedite the workflow. The software is used to apply principles of composition, colour and light, and visual narrative to shots. After each module, students will produce a finished piece of concept art.
