Visual Storytelling for Films and Comics is a six-week course taught by Storyboard Artist and Comic Book Illustrator, Chewie Chan. The visual sophistication of feature films and comic books have developed over time. In this intensive short course, students will become familiar with their visual language in order to transform scripts into captivating scenes.
The course will break down the similarities and distinct differences between storyboards and comic books. Chewie will analyse the motivations behind the placement of cameras and the design of compositions within shots. Students will learn how to communicate to audiences. Chewie will reveal the visual cues that enable the entertainment industry to successfully tell stories.
Students will acquire the practical skills to produce engaging storyboards and comics, in preparation for careers as visual artists.

DRAWING:
- The artistic process of planning, researching, and thumbnailing
- The framing of compositions for visual storytelling
- The dynamic sketching of figures and their refinement
COMMUNICATION:
- Understanding storyboard and comic book terminology
- Understanding effective storytelling
- Understanding how audiences perceive visual information
LAYOUT:
- Layouts for clear narratives
- Storyboard and comic book structure
TUTOR PROFILE:
Chewie Chan is a Storyboard Artist and Comic Book Illustrator. He has worked on Superman Returns, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the academy award winning Happy Feet. As a comic book artist, he has drawn Iron Man, The Phantom, Justice League: Mortal, Buckaroo Banzai, and Cthulhu Tales. His career highlights also include George Miller’s first graphic novel. Chewie is a huge believer in storyboards and their power to communicate.
